I am writing this hot on the heels of Valentine’s Day. By now, the flowers are fading, the chocolate has been eaten, and the wallets are thinner from over-priced dinners and gifts. The love that was in the air has faded a bit, as the rest of the week continues to progress. I went on a first date for Valentine’s Day, so instead of love being in the air, it was more like apprehension. 😉 It’s one of those holidays that most people either love or hate depending on their relationship status.
“This is real love–not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” (1 John 4:10)
Most of the Valentine’s gifts that were exchanged and the festivities that took place were between people who love (or really, really like) each other. But God initiated his love for us even without our reciprocation, and gave us an incredible gift without expecting anything in return. How so unlike us, especially on a holiday like this!
“We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.” (1 John 4:16)
Even though my Valentine’s Day lacked the traditional flowers, candy and romance, I know that I am still loved…and it’s a love that never fades because “God is love“. He will never take that love away, so we can trust in it completely. All of the stores will now be selling their remaining Valentine’s merchandise for 50% off or more, but God’s love for us will always remain 100% true and unchanging, and the gift of His son that He gave us is priceless. There is no better deal on earth than that!
