“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Whenever I’m walking through my neighborhood, I always pay attention to people’s landscaping. Some houses have beautifully manicured flower beds, while others have neglected their yard so much it has become overrun with weeds. I admire the houses with beautiful gardens, because I know how much work it takes to keep it flourishing.
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart if full of.” Luke 6:45
Jesus tells us that what is buried inside of our hearts, will come out of our mouths. Our hearts are like gardens that must be constantly cultivated, if we want good to flow out of our lives. Commitment to prayer and the study of God’s word are ways we can plant good seeds that will grow into good fruit. Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness and faithfulness should be evident in our speech and the way we deal with others.(Galatians 5:22-23) Sin is like a weed, that starts out small but can take over our hearts if we do not immediately go to God and ask him to help us change. We need to develop a spiritual “green thumb” so that we can grow into the likeness of Jesus and quickly rid of the hindrances in our lives.
What sins do you consistently struggle with and have you dealt with them immediately or let them grow out of control? Pray that God transforms your heart into a garden of good fruit.
