Wake Me Up Before I Go-Go

“Morning by morning he wakens me”

The lazy days of summer have crept into my spiritual life.  The sun is out longer, so I stay up later enjoying the evenings when the Texas heat has finally given us some relief.  But later nights lead to later mornings, and I find myself abandoning my quiet time with God. moon-50233_640I tell myself I can spend time with Him after breakfast….when the housework is finished….when my kids finally take a nap and the house is silent.  I was convinced that it didn’t matter what time of day I met with the Lord until I was convicted by the following scripture.

“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.”  Isaiah 50:4

After reading Isaiah 50:4, I decided to change my habits. I’m working on getting to bed by 10:30 p.m. so I can wake up by 6:30 a.m..  I tell Hulu that I cannot start that next episode.  I have to sacrifice a little sleep in order to wake up before my kids, but it’s the only time of the day that the house is guaranteed to be quiet.  God has always asked for our first fruits- our first and best of everything He has given us.  Since God created my life and my time, I need to honor Him by giving the first part of my day.  Before I am too tired and loaded down by the responsibilities of the household.

I understand that it is not always possible to rise up early in the morning due to certain schedules.  When my kids were infants and waking up all night, I needed every wink of sleep I could get!  But the take-away is that God has something that He wants to tell you, and He needs your undivided attention.  Some of what He wants to share is not just for our own benefit, but it is to “sustain the weary”.  There are people in our lives that need our encouragement, and God wants to speak to them through us.  We must be students who are eagerly looking to hear from God for wisdom we can use to lift up others. child-945422_1920
