Our family just returned from a few days of staying on the lake. It was a last minute trip and I was really praying that all the details would come together so our family could have a memorable time. I prayed that I would find the right rental home. I prayed while at the store that the infant life jacket I found, without a price tag, would ring up for less than $12. It did! I prayed while we packed our stuff and when we started to pull out of the driveway. The trip was a success and I felt like God worked out all the details.
I was grateful that such a big God cares about my small vacation. But it also made me pose this question, “Lord, I have brought you more important petitions. Prayers that make my heart ache and I want you to answer. Why are you answering the small prayers but ignoring my big ones?”
He said to his servant, “Please go back to Mount Carmel, and look toward the sea.”He went up, looked, came back, and said, “There’s nothing.” Seven times Elijah told him, “Go back.”“After the seventh time the servant said, “A little cloud like a man’s hand is coming from the sea. ”Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot, and leave before the rain delays you.’” I Kings 18:43-44
If you are not familiar with the above verse, it is taken from the story of Elijah and the drought that God sent on Israel because of their worship of idols. “Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.”
I began to realize if God cares about all the small desires of my heart, then I know He will answer my larger prayers. Waiting makes many of us become uncertain that God will answer, but the Bible tells us otherwise.
Pray about everything because God cares about all the aspects in your life, no matter how big or small. (Philippians 4:6)
Wait for him to deliver. It took the servant 7 times before he could even see a small cloud. Sometimes God answers immediately, but many times we must wait and continue to bring Him our requests. Waiting is one of the methods God uses to increase our faith. (Luke 18:1-8)
Look for God’s handiwork in the situation, even if it is not completely resolved yet. The servant had to really be searching in order to see such a small cloud in the sky. God is moving behind the scenes and sometimes gives us little glimpses before he delivers.
